UF chapter of Alpha Zeta ag honorary wins big at national conference

Sometimes the word “impressive” isn’t strong enough.

Such is the case for UF’s chapter of Alpha Zeta, the nation’s oldest honors fraternity for agriculture students. At the Alpha Zeta 2010 National Agricultural Leadership Conference, UF took home seven of 16 top honors presented to chapters and individuals.

Chapters from 10 institutions attended the April 8-10 event in New Brunswick, NJ.

“It’s a huge honor to be recognized on a national level,” said Jean Saunders, a junior food science major and public relations director for the UF chapter. She was named member-at-large of the year.

“We all worked really hard this year to earn the awards we received,” she said. “I can only hope that we do even better next year.”

The awards capped three days of workshops, networking opportunities and tours of local farms and nearby Rutgers University.

Besides Saunders’ award, distinctions for UF included:

Sara Molloy – treasurer of the year
Kelin Maciejewski – censor of the year
Margaret Paxson – scribe of the year
Mark Marcojos – adviser of the year
Erika Schwarz – G.W. Roach scholarship
Ashleigh Woodruff – Centennial scholarship

Founded in 1922, UF’s Alpha Zeta chapter currently numbers about 50 active members. Each fall and spring, the top 40 percent of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences student body is invited to pledge.
